Blog assignment 3

I have read the book The Exorcist written by William Peter Blatty. The story takes place in Washington where the main character has moved to finish her latest movie. Blinded by her career she does not notice that her 12-year old daughter is being possessed by a dark presence. Every attempt to uncover the mysteries of her behavior leads to a dead end and her final hope lies in a doubt-ridden priest and his elder companion. Will they succeed in repelling the presence before it grows too strong or will eternal darkness haunt them all?

After I finished reading the book a question rose to my mind. Does supernatural activity exist or is it all some kind of illusion to our minds. I think we all have experienced some things that we just can’t explain why it happened or what is was. But do these things have a natural explanation that we didn’t see or are they supernatural? I have experienced this myself and still have no explanation of what happened that night. I was sleeping at a friend’s house when the speakers of the computer suddenly came to life and started playing music in the middle of the night. I rushed up to turn them off when I noticed that everything was turned off and still the music were playing. Was this supernatural or just a technical error, still doesn’t know.

If you watch TV today there are several shows “trying” to find an answer to if supernatural activity exists or not. The question is, should we believe them or not? It somehow feels like they making everything up to make us believe that these things exist. But our belief for supernatural things has always been with us, like the roman’s believed in their gods we believed in ours. The church’s hunt for witches during the 15th and 17th century is another example of supernatural belief. Today we have all kind of horror and fantasy movies were we explore our imagination of how supernatural activities can happen. Can we say that it’s our imagination that creates our belief in these activities? Because most of the times when we don’t know how things happened, we can always believe that supernatural activity is the answer. To be honest with you I think that we’ll never find an answer to the question if these activities exist. We don’t have the technology to prove it and no matter what, we will always believe in higher powers.

Story of stuff

That the government should be off the people, by the people and for the people, I say good luck with that. The government only work for themselves to earn more money with no regards towards the people in that country. They are greedy and will try almost everything to make a bigger profit, even if it means to desolate the nature in other countries. This is really wrong. The nature can’t repair itself, at least not in this pace that we drain its resources. We have to make an end to this soon. All the pollution we release into the nature only harms us in the long run. I mean the distance each good travels as the different pieces are assembled is way too far to be acceptable. Don’t we have factories in each country that is capable of creating the different pieces or is the cost to high?

We have gone from having no material need to be obsessed with it. I don’t know why it has become like this. We know it’s wrong, but do we have the guts to stop this behaviour? I’m not sure but we have to try. Do we even need everything we buy? I would say without a doubt no, we don’t. Most of the things we buy will be disposed without being used and the golden arrow has become a power unknown to man. The only problem is that this is the sole purpose of all sales, namely to sell everything as fast as you can. Unfortunately if we stop buying the companies will lose money and eventually fire people. This leads to a loss in profit and the circle moves on with more people getting fired. We need to find a solution to this problem; otherwise we won’t have any work to go to or planet to live on.

Our main goal should aim towards reducing our materialistic need and the amount of pollution we release into the nature. We need to find ways to minimize the need of buying new things all the time. If we keep this pace it won’t take long until the resources are fully drained and bigger problems will occur. Why don’t we start today, it’s not that hard to buy things you don’t need or am I wrong?

Snooping bosses

After reading the article I’m not sure where I stand in this question. Truly, it’s good to know if your employees are doing what they are supposed to do, but this problem could be solved by adding more small scaled dead-lines. This will create opportunities for the manager to monitor their employees without snooping, as long as they complete their tasks. But a person simply can’t work eight straight hours and thereby need a break now and then. They might use this break to send private e-mails or surf the Internet. Everyone should be allowed to have some kind of privacy at work and not be monitored all the time. I know I wouldn’t like to be monitored all the time because it sends signals that the company doesn’t trust you, making it less fun to work.

The increasing surveillance of the contemporary society is developing in a bad way. It seems that our freedom to do whatever we want is being questioned/at stake. If we can’t do whatever we want, then where is our freedom? Thanks to the development in technology it is easier for companies to follow every movement we make and the websites we visits. If this surveillance increases there will be no real free world, life will turn into something that looks like a prison. This is not what I want. Surveillance should be used in acceptable levels where you still feel that you’re allowed to do whatever you want, not to follow your every move. Even though security is important it should never attack a person’s integrity. Security has gone too far when someone’s integrity is threatened. What you think and believe is not important when it comes to security.
